karawajewi (Camponotus
(Tanaemyrmex) maculatus F. subsp. aethiops Latr. var. clara nov., Karavaiev, 1926c: 190,
major & minor workers & queen; name revised to C. karawajewi Radtschenko nom.
n. by Radchenko [Radtschenko] 1997e: in key; in Russian, synonymised
under oertzeni by Radchenko,
1997d: 809) Azerbaijan;
Caucasus, Bez. Lenkoran (Gouv. Baku), 27.vii.1906, Schelkownikow
[Lankaran (Lenkoran) is a district in the south) - no images on Antweb
(September 2015).
Note: Dalla Torre (1893: 246) also listed varieties andrius and jailensis from the one Forel (1889:
293 ff) text. Antweb/Antbase wrongly attributes synonymy to Dalla Torre
who simply listed "varieties"; it also lists Camponotus andrius
as a species, attributing the separation to Radchenko (1997d: 807). Camponotus jaliensis as a distinct
species is attributed to Pisarski (1971a: 672; also Agosti &
Collingwood (1987a: 58, list only)
Forel gave major TL 7 mm, HW 1.9, HL 2.1, SL 1.7; minor
TL 4.3 mm. The three varieties were slightly larger, andrius TL 5.5-8.4 mm, jaliensis TL 4.3-7.5 mm, and kappariensis TL 5.2-8.4 mm.
Examination of the type images, listed above, shows no
obvious differences between the type oertzeni
and the other three Forel forms. It has to be suggested that
there is only the one species, separable perhaps by slight variations
in colour although the typical Antweb magenta tint does not help.
The lack of any images of karawajewi (clara) precludes comparison and the
thinking in the Radchenko (1997d) paper is unavailable and in Russian.
