Crematogaster (Crematogaster) defleta Forel - new status

return to key {link to the Hymenoptera Name Server} Type location South Africa (Cremastogaster opaciceps Mayr subsp. defleta n. subsp., Forel, 1910e: 434, worker) from South Africa, in Acacia horrida - see below.

Forel's (1910e) description is at {original description}. Arnold (1920a) gave a translation of the opaciceps type plus that of defleta, this is at {original description}.

The report of defleta as in an acacia suggests a distinct species to the carton nesting type form. The type workers, shown below, also quite strongly indicate that both defleta and clepens are distinct species. The first is smaller, differently coloured, has notably shorter propodeal spines and short scapes. The second is darker, smaller and has a more rounded head.
