return to key {link to the Hymenoptera Name Server} Type locality Nigeria (12. Dorylus atratus, F. Smith, 1859b: 4, illustrated, male; in Anomma by Menozzi, 1942: 165, presumably following Emery, 1895j: 723) from Old Calabar; male only known (see Bolton (1995) - no images on Antweb (July 2014) .

{Dorylus atratus male petiole profile}Smith's (1859b) very brief description is at {original description}.

{Dorylus atratus male petiole profile}Emery's (1895j) longer description and illustration is at {original description}.

The overall size, TL ca 19 mm, and mandible shape would appear to place this in subgenus Dorylus.

Also from Cameroun (at Bibundi, by Tessman), the Congo (at Ogowe, by Mocquerys) and, Fernando Po (by Conradt; Santa Isabel by Schultze); plus a single male found in Zaïre (at Stanleyville, by Lang & Chapin); (Wheeler, 1922).
