Messor caducus (Victor)

return to listIran list

{link to the Hymenoptera Name Server} Type location Armenia (Formica caduca Victor, 1839: 47, illustrated, worker; raised to species by Ruzsky, 1905b: 754, who gave the author as Motschoulsky; seemingly due to citing Dallatorre, 1893: 100, who cited the reference as "Motschulsky" and not the correct "Victor") near Araxe by Victor - no type images on Antweb (August 2017) Location is wrongly given as "Russia" on Antweb.

Antweb also has: material of the unavailable name Messor barbarus instabilis var. semirubra Karawajew, 1926: 100, synonymised by Arnol'di, 1977b: 1638 (also wrongly citing the author as Motschoulsky).
Senior synonym of Messor meridionalis: Atanassov & Dlussky, 1992: 121; of Messor caucasicola: Arakelian, 1994, 34 (Messor caducus caucasicola K Arnoldi, ssp.n. 1977b: 1639. all forms; "barbarus meridionalis sensu Ruzsk. Karaw. non André").
Current subspecies: nominal plus Messor caducus glabrescens (K Arnoldi, ssp. n. 1977b: 163, worker).

Victor's (1839) description is at {original description}. Head and alitrunk reddish, antennae paler, legs black; head with longitudinal striae, the alitrunk finely rugose.

Possibly correct modern specimen on https://www.antweb.org/specimenImages.do?code=casent0010637 but an Iran specimen on https://www.antweb.org/specimenImages.do?code=antweb1008069 seems wrong and more likely to be Messor concolor.
