(Monomorium salomonis L. race indicum

by Wroughton - see below

            Forel's (1902c) description is at .
Bingham's (1903) description is at . Santschi (1936a: 46) separated in a key,
as Monomorium salomonis
strips indicum:
metanotal groove deep, rising sharply to the propodeum dorsum; head as
wide as long, at least with larger workers; alitrunk red or reddish,
head sometimes duller; asiatic subspecies - gaster matt, antennal club
thicker, head less narrow behind, India, st. indicum; versus; gaster smooth and
shiny, v. turkestanicum [Note
it seems Santschi gave the name wrongly, in error for "Monomorium venustum Sm. st. turkmenicum n.st. of Santschi,
1928b: 43 - see https://www.antweb.org/specimenImages.do?code=casent0913804;
the label with that has "turcomanicum"
and the description immediately follows that of Monomorium kusnezowi. The size of
the latter he gave as TL 4.2-4.7 mm; with turkmenicum being on TL 3.3 mm!]

The photomontage of the Monomorium indicum
type worker is collated from http://www.antweb.org/specimenImages.do?name=casent0913803.
Note: this clearly differs from Monomorium kusnezowi in
colouration and
pilosity. This has larger eyes, a deeper metanotal groove and thicker
femora.
Forel (1902c) had TL 2.5-3.6 mm. Head wider and shorter
than Monomorium salomonis. Bingham
(1903) in his key had: Head more or less rugulose, opaque; postpetiole
from above not broader than petiole, nodes subequal; head distinctly
broader anteriorly than posteriorly.
