Paraparatrechina subtilis (Santschi)

return to key{link to the Hymenoptera Name Server} Type location Senegal (Prenolepis (Nylanderia) subtilis n. sp., Santschi, 1920g: 174, worker) - see below
subspecies termitophila (Prenolepis (Nylanderia) subtilis Sants. stirps termitophila nov. st., Santschi, 1921c: 122, worker) from Cameroun, Douala, collected by von Rothkirch - see below
worker only described (see Bolton, 1995) .

Santschi's (1920g) description is at {original description}. Santschi's (1921c) description of termitophila is at {original description}. Found in a termite nest; antennae more slender and head more rounded behind than the type.

LaPolla, Cheng & Fisher (2010) synonymized termitophila but without sighting the type specimen.  Other locations listed by them as Democratic Republic of Congo (former Zaire) Epulu, S D Torti; Gabon, Monts Doudou, 15.iii.2000, S van Noort; and Rwanda, Rangiro, 1.1976 & xi.1976, P. Werner.

{Paraparatrechina subtilis} Nigeria specimens (as Paratrechina species T², Taylor, 1978: 31). WORKER. TL 1.74 mm, HL 0.47, HW 0.45, SL 0.54, PW 0.28
Overall colour yellow-brown, darker on gaster, shiny. Dense pubescence on head and gaster, both with abundant erect hairs. Four pairs of long erect hairs in the main on the dorsal alitrunk and two pairs of smaller hairs outside the main line on the pronotum. Promesonotal suture distinct but not the metanotal suture.
It nests in dead wood on the ground and in soil. Observed foraging on cocoa, where it tends aphids and builds soil tents; also found on coffee.

[Apparently not among material from Nigeria examined by LaPolla, Cheng & Fisher, 2010]

{Paratrechina subtilis}The photomontage is of a specimen from Gabon; Pongara National Park, Pointe Wingombet, collector Yves Braet (Gabon 57).

{Paratrechina ? subtilis}The photomontage is of a worker from Congo, Iboubikro; collectors Yves Braet & Eric Zassi, tree savannah 24 h pitfall trap.

{Paratrechina ? subtilis}Second specimen from Congo, Iboubikro

Paratrechina subtilisThe photomontage is collated from http://www.antweb.org/specimen.do?name=casent017860 Locality: Rwanda: Rangiro; Collected by: P. Werner; ix.1976.
It is the specimen chosen by LaPolla et al. to represent the species (mislabelled). It appears to be almost 20% larger than the types and the fresh workers shown above.
