The Bananas of Upland East Africa - west-central Karagwe

The west-central valley of Karagwe District

Rwabushoga area seen from Nkwenda-Mabire road

30 June 1988

A new settlement area for incomers, including Tutsis formerly from Rwanda, with shambas dating back to around 1975. Yields were often good with bunches around 30 kg but the cash value, around 100 TShillings, was limited by the poor communications with Bukoba and the lucrative market at Mwanza.
