The Bananas of Upland East Africa - D&E Trial at Kalonge, Ibwera |
Demonstration
and evaluation trial at Kalonge, Bukoba District
The site was some 4 km before Ibwera Village, Planting was on 29.12.88. To right and left were areas of mixed banana and coffee bushes. A large area of bananas and coffee stretched up the hill behind this shamba, which was on the lower edge, where the bananas were noticeably porrer and prone to drying out. On 27 January 1989, the first 5 corms had germinated. Rain had fallen on 2.2.89 and weeding had been completed. |
|
An inspection and sub-plot treatment was made on 27.6.89, 6 months after planting. The site was in reasonable condition with only Plot O plants being noticeably smaller. The sucker numbers were counted prior to "pruning" to one sucker per stool. |
|
Follow
up visit on 2.12.89, with sucker count and start of "pruning"
back to one main and one secondary sucker per stool.
My last visit was on 23.1.90, week 55. Assessment of heights and girths was done, plus further application of carbofuran to Plots C2 and FC2. |
