The Bananas of Upland East Africa - D&E trial at Kangantebbe

Demonstration and evaluation trial at Kangantebbe, Muleba District.

The site, shamba of Mr S. Rwezaura, District Agricultural Development Officer, was reached by a farm track from the Kagondo Mission Hospital, itself close to the main A1 road, 40 km from Bukoba (Tanzania Grid Reference UP563311). The whole shamba was on the hill top at approximately 1280 m (4200 feet) asl. The site layout was as shown. This was an area of very poor bananas, those on the shamba being planted some 10 years previously, with severe nematode infestation and many plants were easily pushed over. Spontaneous toppling occurred in an adjacent plot during heavy rain. The rain and when cut transversely, the plant showed a weevil damage PCI of 100% but the central area was not penetrated by tunnels. Weevil infestation generally was quite severe.

Planting was on 10.2.89 and finished, Plot O, the next day. A row of farmer's suckers also was planted , shown as FS.

At evaluation on 4.8.89, the plot status was as shown; with further carbofuran application was scheduled for 10.8.89, in C2 and FC2.

R = replant; M = missing, 1/2 suckers.

A final evaluation visit was made on 22.2.90, when heights and girths were measured. Results from this site are among those in Table 3, Table 8, Figure 2 and Figure 3
