The Bananas of Upland East Africa - General Map of Ngara District, Kagera Region of Tanzania

Darker areas very approximately indicate higher land, rising to 1719 m (5640 feet) asl. My visits were in March and September 1988, to survey the state of the bananas and to plan government-funded trials, to follow the Development and Evaluation pattern used elsewhere under Project funding. Despite the whole-hearted cooperation of the Ngara District staff, especially the District Agriculture Development Officer, J.K. Bagune, the plan was aborted by diversion of funds in Bukoba.

Some local differences in disease problems were seen. Fungal fruit rot and root knot nematode infestations were encountered, and soil fertility problems were seen in the more southerly parts of the main western ridge. Corm rot and heart rot also were found, the latter being seen at Mubayange (close to the Burundi border). Root knot nematode was particularly severe near Mugoma, apparently as an edge effect with shambas of a sweet variety.
