The Bananas of Upland East Africa - Project Nursery at Nkwenda, Karagwe

The Nkwenda Nursery

In the western downlands of Karagwe District at about 1300 m (4260 feet) asl, and some 53 km from Nyakahanga.

Planted 23 March 1988, visited on 30 June 1988 (centre) when germination was about 80%.

Revisited in January 1989. Weeding and mulching was below par and some plants were then showing drought stress on lower leaves but the top leaves were in good condition. None were flowering. Local farmers had visited in numbers and were requesting guidance.

A last visit was made in December 1989 (right).
