T. Close (1866) article on "St. Mary's Church, its probable architect and benefactors", in: Richard Allen (1866) Illustrated Hand-Book and guide to all of the places of interest in Nottingham and its environs (see below).
Anonymous (1874) St. Mary's Church, Nottingham: Its Past and Present History. Allen & Son, Nottingham.
Based on a paper given by Archdeacon Edward Trollope to the Lincoln Archaeological Society (1870) and that earlier written by Thomas Close in Allen (1866, see below). Illustrated by some of the earliest photographs of the Church. Contains some curious transpositions of north and south, especially as regards the two transepts.
John T. Godfrey (1901) Notes on the Parish Registers of St. Mary's, Nottingham, 1566 to 1812. Saxton, Nottingham.
Mainly, as one would expect, a commentary on those Godfrey felt worthy of note or in some way in/famous. Some notes from the registers do refer to structural and other matters.
J.C.F. Hood (1910) St. Mary's Church, Nottingham. Cooke & Vowles, Nottingham.
Possibly the best of the several guide books.
A. Du Boulay Hill (1916) The Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Nottingham. Transactions of the Thoroton Society, 20, 47-61
An account read in the church, on October 4th 1916, to "The Autumn Excursion" of the Thoroton Society, Rev. Hill, the Rector of East Bridgford, was helped in preparing the account by Rev. Atwell M.Y. Baylay, Vicar of Thurgarton.
Harry Gill (1916a) Architectural Notes on The Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Nottingham. Transactions of the Thoroton Society, 20, 62-88
A detailed and precise description of the architecture, analysing the building styles, annotating and illustrating various features, and providing plans of the church - one as it stood in 1916 (accompanying Rev. Hill's article) and a second to suggest the building stages). Other illustrations are of the south aisle gargoyle, the three aisle window styles, an elevation of the north east nave arch and clerestory, and of various masons' marks. Photographs of the south porch and south side clerestory are included.
T. Field (1925?) Church of St. Mary the Virgin. SPCK Series - Notes on Famous Churches and Abbeys (No. 11, price 4d).
The author, Vicar and Canon of Southwell, explained that it was based on the papers by Rev. Du Boulay Hill and Harry Gill (Thoroton Society articles, see below), and "his churchwarden, Mr. F. Arthur Wadsworth", with photographs by a member of the congregation, Mr. F. Baker. Some of his dates are wrong, such as the "1843" works, which were done from 1845.
Anonymous (undated, but possibly 1930's) Leaflet on St. Mary's church.
Although undated this does refer to the War Memorial of 1922, and to Canon Field's booklet.
Anonymous (1938) New High Altar at S. Mary's, Nottingham. Article in Southwell Diocesan Magazine, for June 1938, 112.
J. Holland Walker (undated, ?1941, reprinted ?1947) A Short History of the Church of Saint Mary the Virgin Nottingham. British Publishing Company, Gloucester.
A somewhat idiosyncratic and not entirely accurate work. A handwritten manuscript for this is held in the Vestry, the printed version includes the 1940 additions, although the photograph of the north transept shows the newly inserted door to the chapter house. Holland Walker (1874-60) was a wholesale clothier by trade and High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire from 1945. He is commemorated by a stained glass window in St. Peter's Church (Anon. 1986. The Windows of Saint Peter's Church. St. Peter's PCC).
A.C. Ward (1953) An episode in the history of St. Mary's church, Nottingham. Transactions of the Thoroton Society, 56, 60-76.
This is a curious article, written as if the author had been present and without much in the way of references. Most of the text concerns the struggles of Archdeacon George Wilkins (1785-1865, Vicar 1817-1843, Archdeacon 1832 till his death) to raise adequate funds for the upkeep and repair of the church. Details are given of alterations in the 1830's. After the resignation of Wilkins, the next Vicar (Rev. J.W. Brooks) had to tackle the major task of saving the tower from collapse.
C.S. Bayes (1957) A Short History of the Church of Saint Mary the Virgin Nottingham. Revised Edition. British Publishing Company, Gloucester.
Updates with notes on the 1940 choir vestry and the 1950s additions.
D.J. Peters (1974) A Short History and Guide. St. Mary's Church. Quite good on history but limited as a guide.
Andrew Abbott & John Whittle (1993) The Organs and Organists of St. Mary's Church, Nottingham. Rylands Press, Beeston, Nottingham.
