all forms described (see Bolton, 1995).

{Pheidole smythiesii worker}Forel's (1902c) description is at {original description}. Bingham (1903: 227) gave an illustrated description this is at {original description}

Xavier Espadaler (pers. comm.) has suggested to me that this may be a species of Aphaenogaster.

{Pheidole smythiesii minor}The photomontage of the holotype worker is collated from http://www.antweb.org/specimen.do?name=casent0907696

Note: There it is classified as Aphaenogaster smythiesii but, although possibly correct, there is no modern revision to support that placement.

The reference given on Antweb as Emery (1921c: 59) [Bolton 1995 Catalogue: Emery, 1921f] is for Stenamma (Aphaenogaster) smythiesii Forel, 1902c: 222).

{Pheidole smythiesii}Photomontage of a worker from Iran, ZMGU612, collector Omid Paknia, from Mazandarum.

Other images can be seen in the folder at - {album}

Note: Antweb at http://www.antweb.org/specimenImages.do?name=cfh000010 show a worker, from Mazandaran, Iran that is titled "Aphaenogaster kurdica" and appears similar if not identical to the one I show here. It is not a type specimen and Antweb does not have type images. The type description for Aphaenogaster subterranea var. kurdica is in Russian (Ruzky, 1905b: 717). Emery (1908d: 332) had it as a junior synonym of A. smythiesii. Arnol'di (1948a: ) listed it as "A. (A.) kurdica" without giving any justification.
