Described by Bolton as widespread in woodlands and forest virtually throughout sub-Saharan Africa (Bolton, 1981b) .

{Pristomyrmex africanus}{Pristomyrmex africanus}WORKER - Of a similar size to orbiceps, TL 2.7-3.4 m; but separable by its relatively small eyes, and a pair of acute teeth or short broad spines on the pronotum. Colour varying from orange-brown to blackish brown (Bolton, 1981b, illustrated, alitrunk and pedicel only).

Collections in Ghana include those at Kibi (D. Leston) and Mt. Atewa (B. Bolton) (Bolton, 1981b); and leaf litter collections at 9 locations, 79 workers, in the semi-deciduous forest zone by Belshaw & Bolton (1994b).

Also from Cameroun, collected at Nko'emvon (D.A. Jackson) (Bolton, 1981b).
