{Pyramica (Smithistruma) emarginata}Mayr's (1901b) description is at {original description}. Arnold (1917: 379) gave a translation, this is at {original description}. Bolton's modern description (1983) is at {original description}. Bolton's update (2000: 301) is at {original description}.

WORKER - TL 2.4-2.8 mm, HL 0.64-0.70, HW 0.39-0.42, SL 0.29-0.32, PW 0.24-0.28; elongated narrow head, long scapes (SI 72-80) and the largest eyes of any genus member from Africa; colour yellow to medium brown (Bolton, 1983: 291, illustrated, full-face view).

Note: The 1983 text had - widely distributed in sub-Saharan Africa. From West Africa records include Ivory Coast, at Lamto (J. Lévieux); Ghana, at Mampong (P.M. Room); and Togo, at Palimé, Kpimé Forest (Vit) (Bolton, 1983).

Laboratory studies of its predatory habits and use of chemical attractants to lure Collembolan prey were described by Déjean (1985).

Bolton (2000) altered that with separating the "species" into five distinct species.  The resulting emarginata is solely known from South Africa (the type collection and one other modern finding). All the West Africa findings appear to be of Pyramica exunca.
