Tetramorium coloreum Mayr

return to group key {link to the Hymenoptera Name Server} Type location Cameroun (Tetramorium (s. str.) coloreum nov. spee., Mayr, 1901a: 273, worker) collected at Mungo-Fluss by R. Buchholz, x.1874 - see below
junior synonym muscicola (Tetramorium humerosum Em, race muscicola n. sbsp., Bernard, 1952: 246, worker) from Guinea, Mt. Nimba, from sifting moss forest leaf litter by Villiers - see below
worker only described (see Bolton, 1995) .

Mayr's (1901a) description is at {original description}. Bolton's modern description (1980) is at {original description}.  The Bernard (1952) description of muscicola was of a distinct colour variation from Tetramorium humerosum, now a synyonym of Tetramorium angulinode.

{Tetramorium coloreum}

WORKER - TL 3.0-3.6 mm; distinctively coloured with head, gaster and (usually) the legs yellow, and the alitrunk and (usually) the pedicel black or dark brown. All dorsal surfaces with numerous stout standing hairs (Bolton, 1980, illustrated alitrunk and pedicel).

More recently from Cameroun by G. Terron, without a location; also from Gabon and Zaïre (Bolton, 1980).

Tetramorium coloreumThe photomontage of a syntype worker is collated from http://www.antweb.org/specimen.do?name=casent0919647.

Tetramorium coloreumThe photomontage of a "cotype" worker is collated from http://www.antweb.org/specimen.do?name=casent0909129.
The "cotype" label does not match the Mayr information but the specimen appears to be among those listed by Bolton (1980) as "no loc. ex. coll. Mayr".

See the Bernard specimen from Guinea, N'Zo, at http://www.antweb.org/specimenImages.do?code=casent0914278. It is swamped in glue and less obviously bicoloured.
