Cataglyphis diehlii (Forel)

Type location Algeria (Myrmecocystus viaticus r Diehlii, Forel, 1902g: 462, worker, queen & male; raised to species Forel, 1913d: 434; Collingwood, 1985: 287; Wehner, 1986: 108).

Collingwood (1985: 287) noted - "This shining black ant is also distinctive in having the funiculus segments shorter than in C. bicolor or C. niger and allied species. The first funiculus segment [see below] is about x 1.3 as long as the second compared with about 1.8 x as long in the C. bicolor group and on this character alone apart from the colour difference, cannot be regarded as a subspecies of C. bicolor.

Wehner, Wehner & Agosti (1994) established that diehlii inhabits gravel plains - "the regs and hamadas" - from the southern parts of Tunisia through Egypt into Saudi Arabia but throughout that broad area it is never abundant.
