Genus Aphomomyrmex Emery (1899e: 493)

In Tribe BRACHYMYRMECINI.

Diagnostic Features - Polymorphic species (but see below) with the head roughly rectangular in full-face view; antennae 9-segmented; palp formula 5,3. Eyes situated well away from the lateral margins of the head; ocelli well below occipital margin.

Emery's (1899e: 493) genus definition is at {original description}.

Revised by Snelling (1979b), previously in Tribe MYRMELACHISTINI. Bolton (1973a) described them as small arboreal ants.

Species known from Africa - Aphomomyrmex afer.
