Crematogaster (Crematogaster) marnoi Mayr new status

return to key {link to the Hymenoptera Name Server} Type location South Sudan (Cremastogaster Sewellei var Marnoi nov. var., Mayr, 1895: 138, worker) Dr Ernst Marno - see below

.

Mayr's (1895) description is at {original description}.

Quite why a form with distinct short propodeal spines should have been regarded as a subspecies of Crematogaster sewelli is odd and I regard marnoi (like Crematogaster acis) as a distinct mainland Africa species.

Wheeler (1922) had marnoi from Congo, Gomba by A. Weiss. This was the Santschi (1910c: 376) report, where he noted the specimen, as "C. sewelli For. st. marnoi Em.", had longer propodeal spines than the type, otherwise similar to the description of Mayr.

{Crematogaster (Cr.) sewelli marnoi} The photomontage of a marnoi syntype worker from (South) Sudan is collated from http://www.antweb.org/specimen.do?name=casent0102294,
Apparently a small example as Mayr gave the size as TL 2.8-4.0 mm.
