Crematogaster (Nematocrema) stadelmanni Mayr
Type location Liberia
(Cremastogaster Stadelmanni nov. spec., Mayr, 1895: 140, worker
& queen) - see cotype (from Cameroun) below
junior synonyms (here)
anguliceps (Cremastogaster (Oxygyne) stadelmanni Mayr
v. anguliceps n. v., Stitz,
1916: 384,
illustrated, worker) from Cameroun, at Ossidinge, no collector
given - see https://www.antweb.org/specimenImages.do?code=focol1512
angustata (Cremastogaster Stadelmanni var. angustata nov. var., Mayr, 1895:
142, worker) from Cameroun,
collector H. Brauns - see https://www.antweb.org/specimenImages.do?code=casent0919677
intermedia (Cremastogaster Stadelmanni Mayr
var. intermedia nov. var.,
Mayr,
1896: 242, worker & queen) from Cameroun, collector
Sjöstedt - see below
dolichocephala (Cremastogaster (Oxygyne)
Stadelmanni Mayr v. doliocephala
Em., Santschi, 1911g: 208, all forms)
from Congo, at Brazzaville, by A. Weiss - see http://www.antweb.org/specimenImages.do?code=casent0912738
ovinodis
(Cremastogaster (Oxygyne) stadelmanni Mayr v. ovinodis n. v., Stitz, 1916: 383,
illustrated, worker) from Zaïre, at Duma, by
Schubotz - see https://www.antweb.org/specimen.do?code=focol1509
spissata (Crematogaster (Nematocrema) stadelmanni
Mayr v. spissata
n. v., Santschi, 1937g: 81, illustrated, worker) from Zaïre,
Sankuru, E
Luja - see http://www.antweb.org/specimenImages.do?code=casent0912739
schereri (Cremastogaster Stadelmanni Mayr
var. Schereri n. var., Forel,
1911e: 273, worker) from Liberia,
at Bendov, by Scherer - http://www.antweb.org/specimenImages.do?name=casent0908651
all forms known (see Bolton, 1995) .
The spissata
form is structurally an exact match for the probable type workers but
is some 33% smaller; doliocephala
by contrast is similar but some 22% larger.
The gracilenta form (Cremastogaster (Oxygyne)
stadelmanni Mayr
var. gracilenta n. v.,
Viehmeyer, 1922: 210, worker
& queen) from Cameroun, Rio del Rey, K Krausse; clearly is
a junior synonym of Crematogaster
magitae.

Drawing of head of dolichocephala
queen from Emery (1922f, Plate 3, Fig 11) - link to sexuals photomontages
Emery (1922e: 158) lists several varieties and refers to
Forel (1911d: 369). Forel wrote (my translation) of "Crematogaster (Oxygyne?) Magitae
Forel as appearing to be synonymous with Cr. Stadelmanni Mayr v. doliocephala Santschi in litt. of
which I have received the queen from M. Santschi. But I do not possess
the type of Magitae". Forel's
comment perhaps is odd as he had described the magitae queen. Emery, however, did
not give a source of the queen whose head is on his Plate 3 (right).

Wheeler (1922) had other records including Guinea
(Conakry, by F. Silvestri), Cameroun (Conradt; Victoria by R.
Buchholz, ), Nigeria (dolichocephala at Ibadan, by F.
Silvestri). He also gave details and photographs (left and "click") of
nests of dolichocephala, as being cone-shaped hard carton
structures some 60 cm long, hanging on a tree, often between two or
more creepers. Forel (1915c, 1916) had similar reports from Zaïre, St.
Gabriel, collected by Kohl, of both the type and doliocephala
with carton nests in trees, the latter nest being 35 cm tall by 20 cm
wide against a branch.
Santschi (1935) noted 2 specimens of anguliceps
from Dingila, Zaïre, collected by H.-J. Brédo, 30.vi.1923. Note - the
minor specimen shown below from Gabon (Gabon 188) has the squarer head
on anguliceps.

Listed from Ghana
by Strickland (1948, 1951a) as the commonest of the minor subgenus
species on cocoa, and found on several forest trees. Bolton (1970-71)
described it as the only member of the subgenus in Ghana and listed it
as one of the six most common carton-nesting Crematogaster species
on cocoa (simply at CRIG or in Ghana is not clear), adding, however,
that it was found in open woodland but uncommon (presumably in terms of
general abundance). Found in a cocoa canopy sample by Room (1971).
Reported by Bernard (1952) from Guinea, Mt.
Nimba; several workers from scrub at Nion crest, 1300 m, and 2 alate
queens from montane grassland, Mount Tô, 1600 m.
See nests as per - Phillippe Annoyer: Before going
inside the forest (2010 expedition in CAR) we have spent 3 days in the
Molongo village near Sangha river at 65 kms south of Bayanga.
A tree was climbing to take 2 ants nests and one was cut (like a cheese
part) to the see reconstruction when we return from the forest (At
return, 19 days later all of the part we take has been reconstructed,
we collect this nest too).
A tomographical image and a reconstruction 3D of this piece of nest was
made in the CHU of Grenoble.
