Dorylus (Dorylus) sudanicus Santschi - new status

return to key {link to the Hymenoptera Name Server} Type location Congo (Dorylus affinis Shuck. var. Sudanica n. var., Santschi, 1917c: 19, male) from Congo, Dar Banda medirional, Fort Sibut, J Decorse
Junior synonym exilis (Dorylus affinis, Shuck. stirps. Löwyi For. var. exilis n. var., Santschi, 1914b: 59, male) from Tanzania, Kibosho - http://www.antweb.org/specimenImages.do?code=casent0911324

.

As shown below, the fresh males from Mali match Santschi's description and are quite distinct from the type Dorylus (D.) affinis. Thus, I raised this form to species status. Now (June 2014) with the availability of the type images the elevation is confirmed.  The exilis male is a very close match.

Santschi (1917c) constructed a key to the males of the numerous varieties already known by that time; this, with his description of pulliceps and sudanica is at .

{Dorylus sudanicus holotype male} The photomontage is of the holotype male collated from http://www.antweb.org/specimen.do?name=casent0911334.
