Contents The Ants of Africa
Mosaics - Ghana - Ant species found on cocoa trees, 1969-72
From Majer (1975) -
A list of insects and other invertebrates associated with cocoa (Theobroma cacao) in a Ghana cocoa farm.
Most species collected by pyrethrum knockdown method from a single 2.55 ha plot at the University of Ghana Agricultural Research Station, near Kade (0°55'W 6°09'N). Others denoted [S] were collected by hand sampling from cocoa within 5 km of the study plot. The numbers [xxx] give the frequency in 144 pkd samples. Most determinations were by B. Bolton. Outdated names are shown in (brackets).

From Room (1971) -
Table 1. The ants of a cocoa farm locality in Ghana
Showing species recorded from cocoa trees at a farm close to the Mampong-Mamfe road, on top of the Akwapim Hills. Large, old trees, without shade, and a broken canopy.
Sampling by hand over the period December 1969-July 1970. The numbers [xxx] give the frequency in 168 samples from insolated cocoa canopy, from 30 farms, although the samples were aimed at having 30 samples in the territories of each of the dominants - Oecophylla longinoda, Crematogaster striatula, Cr. africana and Cr. clariventris plus 11 samples from Cr. buchneri territory and 37 other samples. [#] are records from cocoa canopy (Room, 1975). Outdated names are shown in (brackets).

Tetraponera sp B [1]

Bolton (1980) listed findings of Tetramorium species by Majer at Kade as including amentete, browni and guineense. These were given by Majer (1975) as, Tetramorium sp. 37 [S]; Tetramorium sp. A [1]; and, Tetramorium sp. B [2] but are not separable from Bolton's paper. Also in Majer was - "Small Dolichoderine" [8].

The Tetramorium forms listed by Room (1971) ought to have been readily identifiable from Bolton (1980) but that was not the case. The same applies to the Monomorium (Bolton, 1987) and Polyrhachis forms (Bolton, 1973b).
