Hypoponera imatongica (Weber)

return to key {link to the Hymenoptera Name Server} Type location South Sudan (Ponera coarctata (Latr.) , imatongica ssp. nov., Weber, 1942a: 44, illustrated, worker; combination in Hypoponera and raised to species by Taylor, 1967a: 12) from Imatong Mountains, collected by the author; no images on Antweb (January 2015)
see Bolton, 1995) .

Bolton & Fisher (2011: 15, 62) regard this as a junior synonym of Hypoponera jeanneli. They make a surprising and disparaging remark that Weber's description was inadequate, without referring to his drawing, and state that without the type material this taxon would be "utterly unidentifiable". I choose to sustain the species

{Hypoponera imatongica}Weber's (1942a) description is at {original description}.

WORKER - TL 2.7-2.8 mm; HL 1.2 X HW; mandibles with 8 denticles; propodeum apparently very short; shiny, densely punctate; yellowish-brown, head darker.
