The Ants of Africa
Genus Hypoponera Hypoponera male Congo Sud
Hypoponera male Congo Sud
Type location Congo
collected by Yves Braet, male only known.
The photomontage is of a specimen from Congo,
Dzio-Dzio, Ngabe, Région de
Pool; 3°29'33" S 15°18'33" E; 7 October 2007; collected by sweep
netting (fauchage); Yves Braet. Other images
can be seen in the folder at - . TL
ca 3.2 mm; uniform brown, ocelli large. The colour and gaster pilosity
resembles Hypoponera inaudax, which is
from the Congo Basin, but the large size suggests perhaps not (H. abellei has a male that is
smaller than the worker).
The
photomontage of the above male compared with the Emery (1911d) male of Hypoponera eduardi.
Forel
(1874) had the latter as TL 2.7 mm, pygidium not apically pointed;
weakly shiny but whole body
covered with dense puncturation and abiundant pubescence; few erect
hairs except at apex of gaster; brown to
blackish on the dorsum of the head and gaster; ocelli size not
mentioned. The Congo specimen has covering of sparse decumbent
hairs on most of the gaster.
See also the
photomontage of the male of Hypoponera abeillei (Santschi,
1921e). TL 1.8-1.9 mm; brownish black, appendages, greyish yellow -
true Hypoponera - ocelli as large as the interval separating them
