Hypoponera male Congo Sud

return to key {link to the Hymenoptera Name Server} Type location Congo collected by Yves Braet, male only known.

{Hypoponera dulcis}The photomontage is of a specimen from Congo, Dzio-Dzio, Ngabe, Région de Pool; 3°29'33" S 15°18'33" E; 7 October 2007; collected by sweep netting (fauchage); Yves Braet. Other images can be seen in the folder at - {original description}. TL ca 3.2 mm; uniform brown, ocelli large. The colour and gaster pilosity resembles Hypoponera inaudax, which is from the Congo Basin, but the large size suggests perhaps not (H. abellei has a male that is smaller than the worker).

{Hypoponera males comparision}The photomontage of the above male compared with the Emery (1911d) male of Hypoponera eduardi. Forel (1874) had the latter as TL 2.7 mm, pygidium not apically pointed; weakly shiny but whole body covered with dense puncturation and abiundant pubescence; few erect hairs except at apex of gaster; brown to blackish on the dorsum of the head and gaster; ocelli size not mentioned.  The Congo specimen has covering of sparse decumbent hairs on most of the gaster.

{Hypoponera abeillei male}See also the photomontage of the male of Hypoponera abeillei (Santschi, 1921e). TL 1.8-1.9 mm; brownish black, appendages, greyish yellow - true Hypoponera - ocelli as large as the interval separating them
