Lepisiota somalica (Menozzi)

return to key {link to the Hymenoptera Name Server} Type location Somalia (Acantholepis somalica, Menozzi, 1927f: 359, illustrated antenna, queen & male) (Bolton, 1995, wrongly has worker & queen).

{Lepisiota somalica antenna}See description at {original description}. Menozzi thought this might be the sexual stages of Lepisiota carbonaria or Lepisiota curta. However, the carbonaria queen is given as TL 4.5 mm, whereas Menozzi has the somalica queen as TL 7.5 mm. With curta only the worker has been described but there are close similarities between that worker and the queen shown below.

{Lepisiota somalica} The photomontage of the type queen is collated from http://www.antweb.org/specimen.do?name=casent0905866.
