The Bananas of Upland East Africa - D&E Trial at Kaigara

Demonstration and evaluation trial at Kaigara Primary School, Muleba District

The site was some 3 km before Muleba town, at approximately 1310 m (4300 feet) asl, and 60 km from Bukoba. (Tanzania Grid Reference UN5298xx)

The site was flat and would be looked after by the school agriculture teacher and pupils. Planting was on 8.3.89.

When first visited, January 1989, the site was under maize with the remains of bananas. The latter were severely infested by nematodes and could be pushed over with ease. Banana weevils also were found, with the stem of one small plant containing about 12 adults.

Evaluation visits

An inspection and sub-plot treatment was made on 4.8.89, 5 months after planting. The site was in good condition; 1 or 2 = sucker numbers; U = undersized; M = missing; D = damaged; Dy = dying. A further 3 g a.i. of carbofuran was applied to C2 and FC2 in September 1989.

My final visit was on 22.2.90, 50 weeks after planting, when heights and girths were measured.

Photographs on 4.8.89, five months after planting.
Looking from Plot O, diagonally to Plot FC, with Plot F to left and Plot C to right. The mulching and weeding is visibly good.

Treatments FC (right) and F (left) in foreground. Background planting by school of suckers.

Treatment F is left and FC right, with O in far corner. In foreground and right are suckers planted by the school

Results from this site are among those in Table 3, Figure 2 and Figure 3
