Ponera swezeyi (Wheeler)

return to key {link to the Hymenoptera Name Server}Type location Hawaii, USA (Pseudocrypteropone swezeyi, new species, Wheeler 1933g: 16, illustrated, worker and queen; in Ponera by Wilson, 1957b: 370; see also Taylor, 1967: 85) Honolulu, R H Van Zwaluwenburg.

{Ponera swezeyi}Wheeler's (1933g) description is at {original description}. Taylor (1967) reported it also from Samoa and gave a more detailed description. his dimensions were: HW 0.29-0.33 mm, HL 0.38-0.44, SL 0.25-0.28, CI 72-78, SI 84-85, PW 0.21-0.24; he noted also that there is a single faceted eye. Soil nesting.

{Ponera swezeyi}The photomontage of a worker from the type collection is collated from http://www.antweb.org/specimen.do?name=0915294.

{Ponera sewzeyi}The photomontage of a worker from Tanzania - Zanzibar is collated from http://www.antweb.org/specimen.do?name=casent0900367.

Dimensions (assuming Antweb scale correct) HW 0.30, HL 0.39, SL 0.25, PW  0.19, CI 88, SI 83.  Apart from the head being proportionally slightly narrower than the type form, this does appear a good match for a species otherwise reported on from Pacific Islands very far away. Another possibility is Ponera incerta, which is similar and has a more likely connection by virtue of distribution but that is some 1.2 X larger overall, appears to be darker, has a more arcuate alitrhunk profile and a higher petiole node. Soil nesting as with type.
