Olivier's (1792) description of the queen is at - {original description}. Forel's (1874) description of the other forms is at {original description}. F Smith's (1878) description of basalis is at {original description}, he gave it as "shining black": and it seems unlikely to be a synonym of sylvaticus.

Camponotus sylvaticus catalana majorThe photomontage of a type worker of catalana is collated from http://www.antweb.org/specimen.do?name=casent0905294.

Emery (1924c) noted "differing from the type by the dull, piceous colour; alitrunk, funiculi and legs slightly reddish- brown".

Camponotus sylvaticus catalana minorThe photomontage of a type worker of catalana is collated from http://www.antweb.org/specimen.do?name=casent0905295.

Egypt record - workers & queen from Kantara, Suez, collected by Issel, in Emery (1877b: 364) but apparently not listed in Emery (1925b: 101). Previously, we thought this might be the species illustrated by Savigny (Audouin, J.-V. 1825-27: Plate 20 Fig 2) but now feel that was probably Camponotus cognatocompressus.
