Crematogaster (Sphaerocrema) fauconneti Forel - new status

return to key {link to the Hymenoptera Name Server} Type location Zaïre (Cremastogaster Wilwerthi Santschi, v. Fauconneti n. var., Forel, 1910e: 434, worker) collected at Nyangwe to Stanleyville, by Fauconnet - see below
junior synonym (here) confusa (Cremastogaster Wilwerthi Santschi v. confusa n. var., Santschi, 1911g: 208, worker; new synonymy) from Congo collected at Gomba, by A. Weiss - see below .

Forel's (1910e) description of fauconneti is at {original description}. Santschi's (1911g) description of confusa is at {original description}. The distinctive colouration and general sculpturation, etc. so clearly separates this form from the yellow-brown Crematogaster wilwerthi that I feel justified in raising it to full species status.

{Crematogaster fauconneti}The photomontage of the type worker is collated from http://www.antweb.org/specimen.do?name=casent0908616.

{Crematogaster fauconnetii} The photomontage is of a specimen collected in Central African Republic, Dzanga-Sangha NP; collector Phillipe Annoyer (CAR EP).

{rematogaster fauconneti}The photomontage is of a worker from Congo, Réserve de Lésio-Louna; collector Eric Zassi (Crematogaster sp2).

{Crematogaster fauconnetii queen} The photomontage is of a queen collected in Central African Republic, Dzanga-Sangha NP; collector Phillipe Annoyer (CAR GS).

The colour and sculpturation suggest this is the hitherto unreported queen of fauconnetti.

{Crematogaster fauconneti}The photomontage is of a worker from Gabon, Pongara National Park, collector collected by Yves Braet (Gabon 105).

This and those below are somewhat larger than given by Santschi (1910c) but having the reduced sculpturation on the dorsum of the alitrunk and otherwise fine sculpturation.

{Crematogaster fauconneti}The photomontage is of a worker from Gabon, Pongara National Park, collector collected by Yves Braet (Gabon 101).

{Crematogaster fauconneti}The photomontage is of a worker from the Central African Republic, Dzanga-Sangha National Park; Camp 2 ED; 02°49’07.9" N 16°09’28.3" E 377m ; 30.i.2005, U.V : 18h30-3h00, en bordure du fleuve Sangha; collector Philippe Annoyer (Camp 2 ED). This has a less obviously striated head.
