valida (Aphaenogaster subterranea valida subsp. nov., Wheeler 1915b: 4111, all forms) type location USA, Cheyenne Canyon, Colorado; larger (Wheeler claims dimorphic workers) and light chestnut brown, very shiny; probably a separate species; see https://www.antweb.org/specimenImages.do?code=casent0172936

{Aphaenogaster subterranea} The photomontage of a worker labelled "A. striolo-subterranea", from the Forel collection and collected in Algeria, is collated from http://www.antweb.org/specimen.do?name=casent0907683. This appears to be have more sculpture on the front of the head than European examples that can seen on Antweb.
