maculatus species-group

Camponotus (Tanaemyrmex) liengmei Forel stat. rev.

return to key {link to the Hymenoptera Name Server} Type locality Mozambique (Camponotus sexpunctatus n. spec. var. Liengmei, Forel, 1894b: 67, major & minor workers; Forel, 1907g: 88, male) Delagoa Bay, Dr Liengme.
This was placed as a subspecies/race of maculatus by Forel (1901h: 69), then raised to species by Santschi, 1923e: 292, who had the substantive species name as with a new variety ugandensis (Campontus (Dinomyrmex) Liengmei For. v. ugandensis n, var.) Uganda, Hargreaves [latter still placed as a subspecies of maculatus according to Bolton, 1995: 128, without any authority, but seemingly following the status of  junior synonym of maculatus given by Baroni Urbani, 1972: 125] .

With the photographs of the cotype and a fresh specimen from Kenya, I have reverted this distinctive form to species status. Forel's (1894b) description is at {original description}. Arnold (1922: 636) gave a translation, this is at {original description}.
As with Camponotus sexpunctatus, this is a large form, major TL 15-17.3 mm (upper size from Arnold, 1922); minor TL 9.5-12.5 mm.
Santschi's (1894b) description of ugandensis is at {original description}. The last is slightly smaller and has a darker head with more pronounced decumbent pubescence (see bottom of page).

{Camponotus liengmei major}The photomontage is of a major worker from South Africa, Elandskrans; collector Sam Danflous.

When I first tried to identify it this major appeared to be a close match to the original brief descriptions of caffer, although perhaps slightly smaller. The short bristly hairs on the genae are distinctive but not mentioned previously. This is a little smaller than the type liengmei but that hs the hairs on the genae.

{Camponotus liengmei minor}The photomontage is of a minor worker collected as above.
