Crematogaster (Decacrema) costeboriensis Santschi - new status

return to key {link to the Hymenoptera Name Server} Type location Ivory Coast (Crematogaster (Decacrema) solenopsoides Em. stirps costeboriensis n. st., Santschi, 1919h: 86, worker) collected at Region of San Pedro, by C. Phore (on label as C. Thoiré, 1901) .

Santschi's (1919h) description is at {original description}. I have separated this from Crematogaster (Decacrema) solenopsides as it is quite clearly different from the specimen of solenopsides that I have from Tanzania. The overall colour is darker and the shape of the petiole is quite distinct.

TL 2.0 mm; head slightly longer than wide, laterally convex; eyes flat; promesonotum convex; propodeal spines a little longer than one-third their basal separation; propodeum laterally bordered; petiole trapezoidal, with the anterior and posterior angles dentate, subtended by an almost horizontal tooth; dark brown, gaster brown-black, appendages brownish-red.

{Crematogaster costeboriensis } The photomontage of the type worker is collated from http://www.antweb.org/specimen.do?name=casent0908527.

{Crematogaster costeboriensis}

Crematogaster (Decacrema) species T³

Nigeria specimens. WORKER. TL 1.87 mm, HL 0.54, HW 0.50, SL 0.36, PW 0.31 (Taylor, 1979: 21)
Colour orange, darkening posteriorly, gastral apex near black. Shiny, unsculptured. Erect hairs fine and sparse. Pilosity very sparse on the head and gaster. Alitrunk convex in profile, metanotal grove slightly impressed, propodeal spines long, acute and upturned. Petiole trapezoidal in dorsal view, corners acute, subpetiolar spine relatively long with a rounded apex. Postpetiole with a slight longitudinal depression.

In Nigeria, it nests in dead wood and under dry bark. Occasionally found on cocoa (rare) and native shrubs, also on coffee. Entwistle (1972) lists a Crematogaster (Decacrema) species as among the ants which tend mealybugs in Nigeria but he gives no other details.

Previously thought by me to be Crematogaster petiolidens.
