Hypoponera rothkirchi (Wasmann)

Hypoponera rothkirchi (Wasmann)

return to key {link to the Hymenoptera Name Server} Type location Cameroun (Ponera Rothkirchi, Wasmann, 1918b: 145, "ergatoid queen"; worker, by Santschi, 1926b: 208) collected at Soppo by v. Rothkirch, 1912 - no images on Antweb (January 2015); queen later described from Fernando Po (Menozzi, 1944: 434)

New combination in Hypoponera, in Bolton, 1995) .

Bolton & Fisher (2011: 43) place it as a junior synonym of Hypoponera dulcis. I feel, however, that their synonymy is unjustified, with H. rothkirchi clearly being a different golden-yellow colour to the type form dulcis. Their pale form specimen used to illustrate their paper is shown below.

{Hypoponera rothkirchi}Wasmann's (1918b) name, without description, simply denoted as an ergatoid female found with Hypoponera myrmicariae, is at {original description}. Santschi's (1926b: 208) provided a brief note, accompanying an illustration of rothkirchi, as sent to him by Wasmann, this is at {original description}.
