Tetraponera caffra (Santschi) new status

return to key {link to the Hymenoptera Name Server} Type location South Africa (Sima natalensis Sm. stirps caffra n. stirps, Santschi, 1914e: 15, all forms) from South Africa, Zululand - see below
quaniama (Sima natalensis Sm. st. cuitensis For. v. quantama n. v., Santschi, 1937d: 218, worker) from Angola, Kapunda - see below

With the Antweb images and fresh specimens below I have raised this to full species status from a subspecies of Tetraponera natalensis. The anterior margin of the clypeus is quite different, being markedly concave, and the mandibles are much stouter on both worker and queen.

It appears that, without comment, Ward & Downie (2005) raised this to species status from DNA analysis.

antschi's (1914e) description is at {original description}. Arnold (1916: 177) gave a translation of obscurata and caffra is at {original description}, his translation (1916: 177) of cuitensis var. bulawayana is at {original description}. Santschi's (1937d) description of quaniama, is at {original description}.
