Monomorium dentigerum (Roger)

return to listIran list {link to the Hymenoptera Name Server} Type location Iraq (Mesopotamia; Syria on Antcat) (Atta dentigera, Roger, 1862b: 30, worker; Emery, 1908g: 668, queen & male; in Holcomyrmex by Andre, 1883b: 346; in Monomorium, Emery, 1908g: 667; also in Bolton, 1987: 320, in scabriceps-group, see below).

Monomorium dentigerumRoger's (1862b) description is at {original description}. Emery's (1908g) description is at {original description}. Radchenko's (1997b) description is at {original description}. Bolton (1987: 320), had it as a single species in the Palaearctic region around the eastern Mediterranean. Radchenko (1997b: ) placed M. dentigerum and M. evansi in a dentigerum-group excluded from the scabriceps-group, both being monomorphic unlike the latter group members, e.g. Trichomyrmex abyssinicus. Both also have elongated eyes and circular spiracles. The type images, however, suggest that, as Radchenko thought, M. evansi is almost identical (see https://www.antweb.org/specimenImages.do?code=casent0902181), if not identical to dentigerum.

{Monomorium dentigerum}The photomontage of a worker from the type collection is collated from http://www.antweb.org/specimenImages.do?name=focol1724. Plus the lateral pedicel from FoCol1726.

Note: this clearly differs from Monomorium kusnezowi in colouration and pilosity. This has larger eyes, a deeper metanotal groove and thicker femora.
