The deepwater rice farmer's year - 3 - waiting for take-off

No - this remarkable crop is able to withstand severe drought! After some six weeks the rains come again in late-May.

The DWR starts to grow again and some farmers like to thin out the dense growth.

Weeds also like the rain and they have to be dealt with - but they are useful for cattle fodder.

"Tramlines" left by weeding.

The DWR now looks no different from ordinary rice (which does not have to be grown in shallow flooded paddy).

The flood arrives - in some areas the water carries silt which helps to replenish soil fertility.

The flood arrives - there is a disaster for some inhabitants - ants with no escape! (this was local rainwater flooding at the Narshingdi ufra site 26 June 1982).

The ants in close up.
