Santschi's
description of the punicus male
has TL ca 30 mm.

Queen or gyne
Santschi gave
the gyne TL as 42 mm, HL (without
mandibles) 4.1 mm; reddish yellow, gaster lighter; funiculi, small
tarsi and hypopygium red brown; glabrous; mostly smooth and shiny, with
some finely shagreened areas.

Ionescu, of Tel Aviv University has kindly sent me photographs of
a gyne from Israel, Kefar-Saba, 10.xi.1967, Z. Zuck-Rimon. From
those I have compiled the photomontage. The original photos are on

Workers
Santschi
(1926e) showed small drawing of the workers (see above) and the heads
(right). He described punicus
as TL major 11 mm, minors down to 2 mm; uniformly light reddish-yellow,
gaster paler, overall paler than the type fulvus; mandibles, antennae,
anterior clypeus and frontal carinae brownish-red; major head more
elongated than oraniensis
with sides more nearly parallel; smoother and more finely punctate than
the fulvus type.
